Environment Details

The following error occurs when setting up Integrated Windows Authentication in Alteryx System Settings > Gallery > Authentication.

Current security context is not associated with an Active Directory Domain or Forest

  • Alteryx Server
    • All versions

Cause

This error typically occurs when the Alteryx System Settings app cannot query the Server domain properly. This can have multiple root causes, but is generally a communication issue with the domain.

Resolution

Please note that for solving this issue it might be necessary to work together with your IT and more specifically with the Windows or Active Directory team.

  • Please ensure that the Server is joined to the appropriate domain,
  • Make sure that the user Alteryx System Settings is running under an account that has permissions to query the Server domain,
  • Additionally that account needs to be an Administrator on the Server,
  • The account System Settings is run under needs to be part of the same forest as the Server domain. More specifically the conditions for multi domain support explained here, need to be fulfilled between Server domain and account System Settings is running under.
As a last resort rebooting the Server might help.

Good information presented here Micheal! Are there some practical examples for the resolution steps that can be blown out for us lowly Alteryx admins, whom aren't likely also system admins?

For example, the second point.

Make sure that the user Alteryx System Settings is running under an account that has permissions to query the Server domain.

What would be the PS or CMD line information that would be queried to determine this?

Another workaround would be to set the Log On account in the AlteryxService properties, as seen in this article: https://community.alteryx.com/t5/Alteryx-Designer-Knowledge-Base/Publish-To-Tableau-Server-Error-Acc...
