Improve the connection with the Tree Tool on Gallery

I find I intermittently loose connection when I use the Tree tool in the gallery. Are there any best practices to avoid connection failures? Is an SQL server connection better than a xml? Or is this more a firewall issue?

 

Any insight would be most appreciated.
