🛠️ Issue with Tableau Output Tool after Alteryx Server Upgrade

Hi Community,

We’re encountering a persistent issue with the Tableau Output Tool (v1.5.2 and v 1.5.3 ) after upgrading our Alteryx Server to version 2024.2.1.94 Patch 7.

🔍 Problem Summary

After the upgrade, several workflows intermittently fail with the error:

“Connection to platform was not successful”

This occurs randomly—even when running the same workflow multiple times.
We are using DCM with Personal Access Tokens for authentication.
None of the affected workflows contain multiple Tableau Output tools.

🧪 Troubleshooting Summary

We’ve had an extensive dialogue with Alteryx Support, including log sharing, environment reviews, and configuration checks.
Alteryx concludes that the issue originates from the Tableau side.
However, we find this very unlikely, as the issue only appeared after upgrading our Alteryx Server, and the same Tableau setup worked flawlessly before.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues with the Tableau Output Tool post-upgrade?
Any insights or alternative explanations would be greatly appreciated.

Hi jandalgaard,

Yes, this intermittent "Connection to platform was not successful" error with the Tableau Output Tool after upgrading Alteryx Server is a known issue often related to Data Connection Manager (DCM) settings rather than Tableau itself.

To address this:
  • Ensure that DCM is enabled for your organization in the Alteryx System Settings.
  • Confirm that the SDK (Gallery) Tools support setting in DCM is set to "Allow All" rather than just "Allow."
  • In Designer, verify that DCM is enabled under Options > User Settings > Edit User Settings, and SDK Access Mode is set to "Allow All."
  • Set up and synchronize your Tableau Personal Access Token credentials properly via File > Manage Connections > Synchronize.
These steps help ensure that the Tableau Output Tool can authenticate consistently on the server. The error appearing only after the server upgrade aligns with changes in how DCM enforces connection permissions.

Hi @chandra_balusugure

Thank you so much for your suggestion.

Our DCM is set to "Allow All" both in Gallery and Designer, so I am pretty sure this isn't the issue :-/

Hi jandalgaard

I think it's a defect with the Tableau Connector (GCSE-3425/TPM-4695) that has been logged to address this.
