Welcome to Part 4 of the License Series. While we hope you never have to visit this page, we know that each unique environment can cause issue with installing any software and want you to be able to quickly resolve the license issue. Below are some common errors we see with users attempting to activate a license.

We have two different ways to activate your license. A license key or a license file. A license key will be able to be used if the company has the setup as seen in Part 1 and has internet access. If the user does not meet the requirement, or does not have internet access, the user will have to use a license file. Both of these will be sent to you in an email.
Your license key or file is your access to Alteryx.

PLEASE KEEP YOUR LICENSE KEY EMAIL OR FILE. We ask that you keep this email due to equipment changes that may occur. This will make it easy and quick for you to get back up and running if for whatever reason you are no longer using Alteryx on your current machine.
Important: The license will be associated to a user's email. Only unique emails can be used with the license key. The user cannot use their email address more than once on the same key. Nor can a license be utilized with one email address on two machines simultaneously. Each machine and email needs to be licensed per your contract. If a user wants Alteryx deployed on more than one machine, the user would need two keys or use two seats with different emails on the same key.
Understanding Seats on your license:
License keys are created with a minimum of one seat and a maximum of 300. License Owners may distribute the key to as many named end users as there are seats. For instance, if my license key contains 10 seats, the License Owner will distribute the license to 10 named end users to activate with their email address. Active named users will appear on the Gallery. See the ‘License Management’ section found in Licensing Series Part 3 for more information on how to manage users on the gallery and the responsibilities of a License Owner.
Here is what your license key email information consists of:
Number of seats
Expiration date of license
Alteryx Designer Install Screen:

If you are using license files, you would receive an email from one of our Fulfillment team associates with the file attached. Save this file to the machine that has Alteryx deployed. Once saved, double click on the file and Alteryx will open with the License Manager window showing what is on the license file.
When activating a license, you may receive the below window when you have the Alteryx Scheduler or Server installed making you aware that Admin rights are necessary to run these versions. If you have the Scheduler or Server please select the License Designer and Scheduler option:
In some cases, your license may need to be manually authenticated. The reason for this may be that the machine Alteryx is on has a proxy setting that does not allow Alteryx to get to its licensing server or that your machine is offline. The error below is asking to try and use the manual authentication process:
If you receive this suggestion, please select OK and send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with the Serial Number, System ID, and Request Code asking for the Unlock Code for Manual Authentication:
Installing a license key the AlteryxActivateLicenseKeyCmd executable can be found within the bin directory of the Alteryx install. The following command installs and authenticates a license key and produces an error on failure. Usage: AlteryxActivateLicenseKeyCmd.exe [LicenseKey] [User email address]
Installing a License File the SrcLicenseManager executable can be found within the bin\bin32 directory of the Alteryx install. The following command installs and authenticates a license file silently and does not produce any errors or warnings on failure.

Occasionally, users might have issues when it comes to installing the predictive tools on their machines.
The first common error (show below) can occur when first trying to install predictive tools after finishing a 64-bit Alteryx Designer installation.
This error occurs when the predictive installer can’t locate the “Alteryx” folder in the “Program Files” folder since the tools are always installed within this folder.
Now you might be thinking “Well I just installed 64-bit Alteryx and I set it to save in Program Files. How is it not in my Program Files folder?”
So what ends up happening here is that if you are running the Designer Installer as a non-admin Windows will sometimes redirect it and save Alteryx to the “Program Files (x86)” folder. Program Files (x86) is meant for 32-bit applications but even if the Designer is 64-bit it will sometimes still write to this folder. You can confirm this by just watching the installation process and checking where Alteryx is actually being saved.
The second thing that might go wrong is if you successfully installed predictive but you can’t see the predictive tools in the “Configure Tool Palette” window.
This issue goes hand in hand with the previous one. You might have an Alteryx folder in Program Files but the actual Designer is somewhere else in a different directory. Just make sure that both the predictive tools and the Designer are being installed in the same directory.
To fix these issues or any other issues that may pop up when trying to obtain the predictive tools:
First, uninstall the Designer and the predictive tools.
Second, run your desired installer as an administrator
This makes sure that Windows doesn’t redirect Alteryx and saves in the proper directory.
As you install, you should see it writing to the correct folder.
Now you can go ahead and install the predictive tools as you normally would, making sure that both are installed in the same place or by default in Program Files-> Alteryx
You may be trying to install the Alteryx Designer or Server and receive an error saying: There was an error downloading "AlteryxInstallx64_VersionX.exe...."
This is due to a proxy blocking the data manager from installing the software.
DO NOT FEAR THE ANSWER IS HERE!
All you need to do is to install the Individual Installs of the Designer/Server/Predictive tools to circumvent the data manager GUI and you will be able to download the designer as normal.
Navigate to licenses.alteryx.com
Log on to the downloads portal
Download the relevant installer .exe files.
*****Please remember to download the correct bit and admin/non-admin version for your machine!
Once the download has finished it will prompt you to finish and open the designer. This is when you can enter your license key and use Alteryx!

With the release of 10.6 came awesome new features, and an upgrade in the underlying R version (from 3.1.3 code named "Smooth Sidewalk," to 3.2.3 code named "Wooden Christmas-Tree"). Using the incompatible R version will cause errors in your R macros.
Simply make sure that your Predictive Tools download is the version compatible with your Alteryx Designer version:
Users on 10.5 should continue to use the R3.1.3 version.
When using Alteryx and Microsoft Revolution R Enterprise, a separate predictive tools install is required (in green). For details, see the Alteryx and Revolution Analytics Integration Guide.
And remember to use the non-Admin Predictive version with non-Admin versions of Alteryx Designer.
To install Predictive Tools for Alteryx 10.0, go to Previous Releases. For Alteryx 9.5, within Designer, go to Help > Install Predictive Tools.
For 10.1, we updated our installer screens to something a bit more modern looking. Here's a comparison:
Some users may run into an issue where the new Alteryx installer screens do not display text correctly if Alteryx is being installed on a machine using a Windows Classic/Windows Standard theme. (See the image to the right.)
Windows 2008 R2 Server OS system uses this theme, so users with this OS may encounter the issue.
We believe this problem will only occur if the machine also has a previous version of Alteryx installed.
If the issue occurs, there is a simple work-around:
Quit the installation
Uninstall the previous version of Alteryx using the Control Panel.
After the uninstall is complete, run the installer again. The installer screens should display properly.

Although 10.1 is a minor release, it contains a number of exciting new enhancements, and we're looking forward to hearing what you think about them.
How to change Alteryx Designer Language?
Starting with version v11.3, it is now possible to install Alteryx Designer in English, French or German. This will impact Designer interface, help page, Predictive tools (partially) and log messages.
Language must be chosen during Designer installation:
In order to use a different language, Alteryx must be uninstalled and then re-installed.
The error above is usually due to a company firewall restriction. If you are receiving the error above when installing, please download run the individual installers from this page: http://downloads.alteryx.com. You can choose admin or non-admin depending on the permissions on your machine.
If you are still having trouble downloading, don't hesitate to open a Support ticket through the Case Portal.
With the release of 10.0, people are naturally interested in compatibility with workflows they have developed in 9.5. Additionally, many users will be in a “mixed version” environment as their company transitions to 10.0 and are interested in what options are available to them.
Applications developed in 9.5 can certainly be opened and run in 10.0. We perform a lot of testing and technical work to ensure that Forwards Compatibility is fully functional. Anything that was built in 9.5 should continue to work in 10.0.
Undoubtedly, the recommendation is to perform the 10.0 upgrade across the organization when all users are ready for the change. This eliminates any issues with “backward compatibility” and makes it easier and seamless to share applications - workflows, macros, etc.
If you do find yourself operating in a mixed environment, there are some things to be aware of:
A 9.5 app that is opened in 10.0, then saved in 10.0, will no longer be accessible via 9.5
If you publish apps to a server, you will want to make sure that the server version is compatible with the apps you will be publishing. If you have 9.5 apps then you can leverage both a 9.5 server, as well as a 10.0 server. However, if you’re developing in 10.0 then the server will also need to be 10.0
If you need to support both environments for a period of time, it is possible to install two versions of Alteryx on a single machine. Admin and Non-Admin versions can be installed side-by-side. (e.g. If a user has the Admin version of 9.5, they can install the Non-Admin version of 10.0 and switch between them.) Recognize that if you publish apps to the server, you will need to be running the Admin version of the same version as what is running on the server.
