Cause

When starting Alteryx Designer the below error is received:

There was an error while loading: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.



There are a few possibilities that could contribute to the error, mainly related to setting files are not reachable or corrupt state.

Resolution

Try backing up and then removing everything inside the C:\Users{username}\AppData\Roaming\Alteryx\Engine folder except for the GalleryAlias.xml, UserAlias.xml, and UserConnections.xml files (so remove all the version folders). This will force Alteryx to generate a new user settings file.

*Note: this removes all user settings, favorite tools, window positions, default colors, proxy settings, etc.

Another suggestion if the above resolution steps do not work, attempt to install a different version of Designer to see if the error appears. Users have also been able to get past this by installing a different version or being provided a different version from our Fulfillment team.
