Alteryx should raise a Conversion Error if re-sizing of a string field in a Select tool results in data truncation. It does this for integers but if a string is truncated there is no indication of this in the workflow output.
Love the new updates to the Browse tool in 2019.2! However, if you choose the option Open results in new window, which I do often so I can see my whole dataset, the search/filter/sort functionality goes away. Would be great if that new functionality also worked in the new window. Thanks!
Using other data viz tools like Tableau, we often plot yearly timeseries of data onto the same line chart so we can quickly compare year-on-year differences. All data viz tools seem to have complexities but the logical approach is the same. What you do is map all the years data to a relative year, i.e. this year, and then give each year it's own title. See the example below snipped from a Tableau dashboard:
In this example 7 years of data have been plotted on the same chart. Note the x-axis, In Tableau we are able to format the X-Axis labels to only show month and day (Mon-D). This removes the common relative year, i.e 2019.
As expected, Alteryx is awesome at preparing data to do this kind of thing. Using the interactive charting tool you can build really nice charts. However there is currently no way to format the X-Axis label, you must show the relative year too, as shown in the picture below (snipped from the browse tool, outputted from the interactive chart tool):
It was really easy to prepare the 5 year min, max and average lines, which is almost impossible to do in Tableau!
My idea in a nutshell is, please change the interactive chart tool so that the labels on the axis can be formatted to the user's choice, i.e. in this case formatted from datetime to "%B-%d".
Please note, the workflow i'm building in this case, is creating 3 line charts of related data, each by year. The end product is a daily email sent to users.
When opening an App in Designer - you are generally opening it to work on. It should not open as an App but rather it should open as a Workflow. Maybe make it so if you hold down the Ctrl or Shift key and opens the App - it opens as an App and you can test it out.
It will be a really nice feature if we can sum up values horizontally (row by row), as what we can do in Excel. This will give us more flexibility and hot to have to transpose data first in order to do the sum, especially when data set is really large. It is very time consuming to do all the preparation work to set data ready.
I really like that I can scroll -- using my mouse -- between the tool groups in Alteryx. Can this UX be added to scroll through my workflows? I usually have a bunch open, and this functionality would be awesome to have there, too! 🙂
PS: Yes, I know I can do Ctrl+Tab...but mouse scrolling is more efficient.
Every time we create a file output - you first have to check if the folder exists - and if not then create it.
Currently it's quite onerous to do a directory create - especially with all the error trapping to make this production safe - and everyone is reinventing the wheel in their own companies.
Given the commonality of this need - could we add a tool that allows you to check for existance of a directory and attempt to create it (with nested directories and useful status / error descriptions to act upon)
Alteryx started as a geospatial application. The "y" and "x" in Alteryx stand for the geospatial origin of the application. So why doesn't every tool in the Spatial Category have a One Tool Example? As of version 2019.2.7, there is only one One Tool Example in the Spatial Category. It is for the Distance Tool.
Please make One Tool Examples for every Spatial tool. Thank you.
We need color coding in the SQL Editor Window for input tools. We are always having to pull our code out of there and copy it into a Teradata window so it is easier to ready/trouble shoot. This would save us some time and some hassle and would improve the Alteryx user experience. ( I think you've used a couple of my ideas already. This one is a good one too. )
When I use the Comment Tool its difficult to select the tools inside it, but when I use the Container Tool the Container Text doesn't support Font Sizes, and doesn't support multiple lines of text so I end up moving the Comment into the Container, but still have problems selecting a group of tools.
So a combined Comment and Container Tools would be wonderful!
Bonus: If the Comment Tool could support Multiple Font Sizes.
When searching for Alteryx help on Google the search results rarely return the current version of the Help documentation from the Alteryx website. Instead, what often happens is that an old version of the Help documentation is returned.
For example, a search for 'Run Commend Tool Alteryx' returns links for the 2018.3 and 11.3 instances of the help page:
These relate to prior versions of Alteryx and a better result would be to link to the /current/ version of the page (the URL for which never changes).
The problem above can be replicated for almost any tool or variant of search terms.
Since Google is such a crucial resource for troubleshooting, there is a risk that (a) users will inadvertently access out of date documentation and (b) users will be confused by the presence of multiple search results.
By adding a 'robots.txt' file to web pages for prior versions of the tool these results can be suppressed from Google search results.
Sometimes I want to test portions of a workflow, independent of other portions. I find myself adding containers, just so I can disable some of the time consuming portions that are not part of my test. It would be nice to be able to enable/disable any portion of a workflow, on the fly. Or maybe just disable/enable any connection with a right-click.
There's often a need to do a cascade of filters which would normally be handled in a programming language by a Case or a Switch statement.
- if it's a cat then go left, otherwise go right
- if it's a dog then go left otherwise carry on right
if it's a fish then go left otherwise carry on right
otherwise do xxxx
This could be handled more elegantly by a conditional split tool that allowed you to specify multiple conditions like a case statement, and which then generated multiple output nodes; with the last one for any leftovers.
Now that we have a Snowflake Bulk Loader option, it would be great to utilize the built-in Snowflake internal staging. This eliminates the need for an end-user to have the technical know-how or access to IT resources to utilize a separate S3 bucket and generally reduces friction in the process.
One thing I have noticed is that for some of the end-users of the apps I have in the gallery is that running the app from server is enough of a barrier that they don't use it at all. I have had to send links repeatedly to gallery, to apps on server for them to run them.
What I would love is a way to create a custom desktop icon (bear with me - I don't have the lexicon.) that an end-user would open and it would launch the app in the server directly (I'm assuming this would be opening a browser of choice, opening the app/workflow to the screen where it gives you the option to 'Run/Download/Schedule' rather than accessing it through a shared collection in the Gallery through a browser.
Possible extensions of this are the ability to create an app for a mobile device where they can access an app/workflow on server directly to run it from a phone/ipad.
