Download tool - allow user to inspect the actual web call

In order to debug a call to a REST API - it is often necessary to take the web call, and pop this into a web browser. Can you add a second output to a RestAPI tool (a derivative of the Download tool) that has a second output that provides the full web call that was made, including the full parameterised URL. This would make it MUCH easier to debug rest API calls.

Similar to this idea https://community.alteryx.com/t5/Alteryx-Designer-Ideas/Download-tool-Request-and-Response-details/i...

except my preference would be to pull Rest API calls into a more specific tool and give a second output for the responses

Good suggestion- I agree this would be helpful when developing connectors

Have you considered using a debugging tool like this to capture ALL traffic to analyse line by line? https://www.charlesproxy.com/ I seem to remember it was a fiddle to set up https access, but the filters allowed you to quickly isolate your application from all the other background web requests made by any system. I used this to test web services calls from a SAP product, but it would work just as well with Alteryx.

+1 I totally depend on Postman to test REST API calls, I'd like to be able to do more of my work inside Alteryx.

This would be a nice add.  Currently, I use Telerik Fiddler to do this.

Couldn't agree more. Like @jdrummey, i use Postman to create/test the calls and then translate that into Alteryx - would be nice to see what is actually being sent when setting it up in the download tool. - or better yet, have a dedicated API connection tool...

Status changed to: Under Review

Thank you for your post!

Our product team is currently reviewing the technical requirements necessary to give users insight into the actual web call occurring when using a Download Tool to call a REST API. Once we have a definitive answer on the technical requirement and we'll be able to make a accurate decision on where or if it can fit into the near future roadmap. Once we are able to make that decision we'll update this idea again accordingly.

Please note this research can take some time but we will do our best to insure a timely response.

Status changed to: Revisit

This idea is being updated to Revisit at this time. While we do have plans to review and update the Download tool in the future, these updates are not on the near future roadmap. We'll update this idea again once our Product team is able to re-evaluate the idea and place it on the near future roadmap.
