I thought it would be nice to be able to verify URLs that come in with data. I would like to use the download tool to capture various errors that would indicate a bad url then parse the message downstream and take some action based on the message.
When presented with a malformed or incorrect URL, the Download tool will error out and no further information will be sent downstream. What you can do instead is use the Run Command tool and 'ping' the URL. For a good URL, you will receive a response like:
Pinging www.alteryx.com [188.8.131.52] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 184.108.40.206: bytes=32 time=56ms TTL=51
By importing the response back in to Alteryx, you can parse the results and verify if the ping was successful or not and act accordingly.
