Curved flight path between two airports

Pulsar

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to create curved flight paths for rendering in Tableau.

I have the beginning and end points for each city, and where the flight ends and starts (city A is start, city B is end), in the attached file.

I want to generate a curved path between the two points so that I can map flights. I've found solutions for doing this directly in Tableau, but they really don't make sense to me.

Working in Alteryx 10.0 due to corporate restrictions on versioning, so if you have a later version, would appreciate a text description along with the workflow (which I won't be able to open).

Thank you!!!

A fun challenge :).

I ported the Python code from http://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/47/what-tools-in-python-are-available-for-doing-great-circle-...

The attached workflow is saved in 10.0 format

I only have Tableau Public but it produced the curves I expected:

There's this package. https://gallery.alteryx.com/#!app/GreatArcs/573b7be2aa690a12807807e7

I've asked the author (James Dunkerley) if he could create a version for Alteryx 10. I'm in the same boat as you about versions.

Original post now unblocked.

FYI - If you are on an older version of Alteryx and you receive a newer file you can edit the XML to use it in your version.  The only caveat is that any newer tools will not work but generally this process always works for me.

Open up the file in a text editor and simply change the version number to 10.0 rather than 10.5 - this applies for 10.0 and 10.1 (i.e. change the setting to 10.0 for both 10.0 and 10.1).

James,

You are always my hero. I really appreciate your work.

For the Tableau lovers, I've added a bit to the discussion. There will be more to come. For now, however, here is a link to an article I wrote to show how to use these results.

Thanks @Ken_Black love the post.

Been playing with similar shredding FlightRadar to get some flight data and putting arcs on it.

My current data shredder is here: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/jdunkerley/Alteryx/master/FlightRadarDownload.yxmd

Uses the Macro version I posted to the community.

Will probably steal your idea of variable path counts and update the gallery macro with it.

Based on @Ken_Black's idea I have updated the macro on the Gallery: https://gallery.alteryx.com/#!app/GreatArcs/573b7be2aa690a12807807e7

It can now do either a fixed number or variable number of segments.

Esther- slightly off topic, but did you find a database with air port lat/longs for your sample? I have airport codes (3 digit) that I'd like to look up against a data source to get spatial info, but can't find anything online.

Anyone else have an idea on a data source?
