I knew someone that dedicated full-time for 2 weeks and passed. He did not have a SQL background, or a heavy Excel background. It really depends what your background is, and how much time you have available to study. But I would recommend taking it once to benchmark yourself after going through the Core Certification Guide and go from there. Good luck!
Adding to this if it is helpful, I dedicated 3 weeks of time and was able to pass the Alteryx Designer Core on the first try. Although I came from a SQL background, but the experience can still be a lot different on Alteryx, as it was for me. Overall, the Alteryx Prep Kit on community is a must to read before taking the exam and can be comfortably covered within 3 weeks with hands-on practice.
