Converting and unioning pdf tables

Meteoroid

Hi all,

Super new to alteryx so sorry if the question has been solved in some way before...

I am trying to concatenate some data together on CCG health budgets. The budget is split into 3 categories (core, primary care, and specialised services). Each CCG gets funding for the 3 segments, but the data is split into 3 pdfs (https://www.england.nhs.uk/allocations/)

  • CCG allocations 2019/20 to 2023/24 (core services)
  • CCG allocations 2019/20 to 2023/24 (primary care medical)
  • CCG allocations 2019/20 to 2023/24 (specialised services)

Does anyone know how to extract the pdf tables into an alteryx-workable format?

Thank you,

Florence

Hi @FloWang, there's a great guide to get started on parsing PDFs by Oliver Power at https://oliverpower.wordpress.com/2018/02/08/parsing-pdfs-using-alteryx-and-a-little-r/

It involves uses a number of R packages to pull out the data from the files, which can be parsed in Alteryx from there. If you need any more help feel free to let me know and i'll take a deeper dive into it for you.

If this solves your issue please mark the answer as correct, if not let me know!

Hi Jonathan,

thank you for your reply. Unfortunately I didn't make it very far into the article because I don't have the R tool in my Alteryx Designer... When I tried to get the R tool for Alteryx I got the error message below:

Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong here? Thanks!

Have you installed the extra predictive tool suite yet? (R tool comes with the download). To check go to the "options" and "help" menus, in either drop-down is there the option to "download predictive tools"? If there if you'll need to follow https://community.alteryx.com/t5/Alteryx-Designer-Discussions/Download-Predictive-Tools/td-p/320907 to do so. Once done you should be able to continue with the Oliver Power blog post.

Hi Jonathan,

I've got the R package installed now and managed to get started on the blog post, but when I try to run the R command in Alteryx, I'm getting a different error message:

Is it to do with the file itself (attached)?

Thank you,

Have you installed the R packages “Rcpp” and “pdftools”?

Meteoroid
