Update value action tool not updating in transpose tool

When I run this as an app and provide a field value, it doesn't update, it just keeps using the BLANK_COLUMN. Why is that? Please help.

This ends up working when I add an output tool and run it as an app outside of the actual workflow. I'll considered it solved for now, although that's a little weird.
