1. Decide if you are a Horizontal or Vertical Layout person. Options>User Settings>Edit User Settings>Canvas>Layout Default
2. Choose whether you want straight connector or Curvy connector lines. Options>User Settings>Edit User Settings>Canvas>Connection Settings Type
3. Use all the Example workflows on each tool- Right Click>Open Example

The first two are a bit tongue in cheek, as they are always so divisive, but it's great to know how you can change your canvas to help you work the most productively.
