If you are referring the the AWS Marketplace Alteryx Server AMI with BYOL (https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp/prodview-nkcabw5i5emdc), this is an AMI specifically for the Alteryx Server product which is leveraged for the centralized deployment, management, and automation of workflows that have been built using the Alteryx Designer product. More information about Alteryx Server can be found here: https://www.alteryx.com/products/alteryx-platform/alteryx-server
Some companies decide to use the AMI and others just spin up a fresh EC2 instance and go through the installation, but that is a matter of preference. If you are currently in an academic program or part of the Alteryx ADAPT program the student license will be for the Alteryx Designer licensing, not the Alteryx Server.
