SharePoint Input tool v 2.4.1 - invalid extension workaround?

I'm trying to input file from sharepoint using the SharePoint Input tool v 2.4.1 - Designer Desktop version 2022.1.1.42604 patch 4

 

Unfortunately for me, the file I'm fetching is an older format "Excel 1997-2003" file with .xls extension 

 

When I attempt to configure the tool, I'm getting an invalid extension error. Research into the error tells me it is due to the tool looking for .xlsx (newer excel) 

 

Are there any tips or workarounds to override this extension validation step? Designer reads the file just fine if I download it to my machine and run it. I'm trying to avoid a monthly manual download step.

 

(EDIT: I dont own the file so i cannot just rename/update it)
