Sending an email alert in the middle of a workflow?

I have a workflow that is part of a weekly routine and currently runs for 55 hours.  I would like to have email alerts triggered at key checkpoints in the workflow so we can track its progress rathter than wait for the alerts to ceom upon completion (success or failure).

Is there a way to configure email alerts within a workflow to be sent at that point in the workflow?

I use block until done tools for this sort of thing.
