Select tool configuration issue when add to a pre-existing workflow in interface designer

Hi

When adding the select or unique tool to a pre-existing workflow in interface designer the configuration pane doesn't show the group by column options for the select tool (or the column names options for the unique tool) - have attached images.

The only way I can get the workflow to run with interface designer is to open a debug workflow and select the required field in the tool before running.

Any idea why this is happening?
