Publish to Tableau Server, not working for Tableau Online?

Hey all!

I am attempting to sign into the "Publish to Tableau Server" tool. In doing so I continue getting the following error:

Status 401:Signin Error 401001: Error signing into Tableau Server

I have double and tripled check my credentials and the URL multiple times. I was reading through the forum and found others saying it was possible to publish to Tableau Online through the server tool.

If that is the case any ideas why I cannot sign in? I read something about special characters in the password but Tableau Online requires special characters when creating a password. Not sure if anyone has a solve or workaround for this issue!

Thanks in advance!

hey @KRatcliff

This post states "The Tableau server is configured to use SAML for SSO signin, and Tableau REST APIs specifically don't work with SAML!"

Do you happen to use SAML?

I am not sure what SAML is, after reading the article I believe it means single sign on?

If so, no I do not use single sign on.

hey @KRatcliff SAML is a method of Single Sign On yeah - effectively just an authentication method.

The only similar issues I have seen are related to the authentication method - for instance:
https://community.alteryx.com/t5/Alteryx-Designer-Discussions/Publishing-to-Tableau-Online-Error-cod...
Who stated that their organisation 'changed the authentication method for the user having issues to use Tableau (local) authentication'.

If that doesn't resonate with your scenario, you might be right with the symbol thing, this post suggests that a specific list of symbols should be avoided in your password:
https://community.alteryx.com/t5/Alteryx-Designer-Discussions/Tableau-Publish-to-Server-Error-signin...

And he states $ is an acceptable symbol to use.

If any of the following are used in a password, it sounds like it will cause issue:
! * ' ( ) ; : @ & = + $ , / ? # [ ] | < > \ ^ ” * %

Hope this helps,
TheOC
