You can click OK button to connect SQL database without clicking test button.
I've just installed version 2022.1 and I'm having the same issue. I can click OK to connect to the server, but how do I set a default database?

I think that we can't set the default database. But If you connect it, the Designer shows all database.
the only way I have been able to set the default database is to setup the new connection without a database then update the SystemAlias.xml or UserAlias.xml file with the database name. Not great for users who are not used to working with xml files directly but they are quite straight forward files.
It seems that the published workaround is to use a DSN Connection instead which is less than ideal.
