What's the preferred way to create test data ?

Most of you probably ran into the need to create test data in various sizes. What are the tools and sites you use to create those ? Preferably free :)

Ideally I would like to create test data in JSON, XML, CSV so I can test our own flows for robustness

Hi Hatter,

U mad, bro? :)

I googled for, e.g., 'Automatically generate CSV', and came up with a number of promising hits. I'll highlight two:

  • https://www.mockaroo.com/ -- really slick UI!
  • https://onlinerandomtools.com/generate-random-csv -- generates (you guessed it!) random CSV, which might be useful under certain circumstances

Would be interesting to see what other Wranglers use. In the meantime, I hope this helps get you rolling.

Cheers,

Thank you, kind @Nathanael Kuipers?

This looks great, on the part with the JSON test data I was trying to find more generators that allows you to create nested constructs. Any idea what could be used in that scenario ?

Ah ha! Well, mockaroo's got you covered there, too:

'Hint: Use "." in column names to generate nested json objects, and brackets to generate arrays.' More info here: https://www.mockaroo.com/help/json
