Error with Macro When Trying to Run Workflow on the Server

Hello,

I've created a workflow that compiles a month's daily files into a monthly snapshot. The files all come from one location and follow the same structure (all the fields are the same) but when I tried to use an input tool, after the first file is read, all the remaining files in the folder are skipped over as they have "a different schema than the first file". I've checked and all the files look the same. So after doing a bit of research, I found a thread in this community talking about Dynamic Input (https://community.alteryx.com/t5/Alteryx-Designer-Desktop-Knowledge-Base/The-Ultimate-Input-Data-Flowchart/ta-p/20480) which I found helpful. I downloaded the batch macro from that forum and it worked well in designer.

I was able to finish the workflow and then I uploaded on the Server so it didn't have to be ran manually. Though when I try running it on a server, I get an error and the flow stops. The error I get is:

"Cannot find macro "C:\WINDOWS\Temp\1\Staging\.........\_externals\1\Batch Correct.yxmc".

I'm assuming that it has to do with the location of the batch macro, but I'm at a loss on how to resolve this. I tried to copy the batch macro and save it in a new location, and I inserted that macro in the workflow instead, but then the workflow wouldn't work properly (the files that I'm compiling didn't feed in) in Designer or on the Server.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey @XLA, when saving the workflow to the Server, make sure you upload it together with the macro. Under "Workflow Options", select "Manage Workflow Assets", and you should then be able to tick the macro to include it in the package. Hope this helps.

Hi,

WHen saving to server have you ensured that you are managing workflow assets and selecting that one to be included?

Checking the box allows the macro to be uploaded together in a common reference folder so the workflow will reference it on the server.

I had actually tried this suggestion before based off of another response on a separate discussion post I found and it originally didn't work.

But this time, I only checked the box next to the macro (before, I had checked all boxes) and it worked!

Thank you for the advice!

I tried this before and I was still receiving the error. But then I noticed in your screenshot, you had only selected the box next to the macro, and left the other unchecked. When I tried to do this the first time, I assumed all of the boxes needed to be checked so I checked all of them. I then tried saving again, this time with only the macro selected and it worked!

Are you able to give an explanation of why it works that way? If not, totally fine, I was just curious for my own sake.

Hi @XLA ,

When you check the box, you are essentially uploading the asset to your Gallery. The box unchecked means your Alteryx Server will read the file from the path provided.

When the box is checked:

The asset is packed and uploaded to the gallery with the workflow.
To change the macro, you must open the workflow from the gallery, make changes, and upload it again.

When the box is unchecked:

The workflow tries to access the asset/macro from its fullpath during each run.
This works if the server machine also can access the macro's path, especially for shared network folders.
You can update the macro directly in the shared folder, and workflows using it will automatically use the updated version.
