Publish to Tableau - Failure when receiving data from the peer

Hi all,

I recently upgraded from Alteryx Designer 2018.4 to 2021.1.4.26400.

Upon upgrading I now receive the following error when publishing to Tableau Server 2020.2.4 -

Publish to Tableau Server (16) TableauServer.Login (36): Tool #10: Error transferring data: Failure when receiving data from the peer

Nothing else changed besides the version upgrade between the first failure and success the day prior. To further confound things, I have a parallel publish to a Tableau Server 2019.1.4 that continues to function with no issues.

I've attempted to setup the Publish to Tableau tool from scratch. In the tool config I can connect to the Server fine, select the Site, Project and Data Source to overwrite with no issues.

I've done some research here and have found that there's a potential password issue with special characters (https://community.alteryx.com/t5/Alteryx-Designer-Discussions/Tableau-Publish-to-Server-Error-signing-in-to-Tableau-Server/m-p/648050#M148974). I've attempted a number of different permutations trying to use an "acceptable" special character with no luck. And again, the publish to 2019.1.4 continues to work no problem.

Additionally, I've gone into the Publish tool macro and tried to find the #10 tool using Ctrl+F find and it doesn't seem to exist.

To summarize:

Alteryx 2018.4 > Tableau Server 2019.1.4 = OK

Alteryx 2018.4 > Tableau Server 2020.2.4 = OK

Alteryx 2021.1 > Tableau Server 2019.1.4 = OK

Alteryx 2021.1 > Tableau Server 2020.2.4 = Fail

I've hit the limit of my ability to troubleshoot this one and am looking for some help/guidance. Thank you!

I can connect to the server fine through Tableau Prep, that's been my workaround to get the data sources published while I try to figure this out. It seems way too coincidental that after a year plus of no publishing issues I would run into communication issues the day after I upgrade, so I have to assume it's something with the way Alteryx is handling the comms?

I've been using https. I attempted with http and still received an error, granted it's a different one this time -

Publish to Tableau Server (16) TableauServer.Login (36): Tool #8: invalid document structure at Line:2 and Column:1

Sounds like the return didn't come through?

I've run into the special character issue several times, and this is not the same error that is typically generated in that situation.

Your error seems more in line with an actual communication issue, and I see it often caused by proxy.

Just curious, are you using http or https to connect to your Tableau Server?  Older versions of Designer handled proxy configurations differently, and I've experienced differing results between http and https.
