It would be very useful to be able to search the field by typing the name instead of scrolling up and down looking for it among a few hundred fields.
+1, would be really useful
Great idea, @Inactive User! We noticed a similar field hunting challenge in a different tool and are currently working to add search capabilities there. I suspect that a related design would work to improve the Select tool as well. How about a sneak-peek of how this may look? Implementing a search into the Select tool may look a bit different than below, but the idea is the same.

After entering search criteria:
We'll be sure to keep this in mind once we make our way to Select Tool improvements! Thank you for the input!
Would be possible to include this on all the tools related to mutli-selects (Joins, Selects, Uniques, etc)? I hate having to do a manual search for names especially on a sidebar when there is a join prefix or "Right" or "Left".
It would also be helpful to sort the Field and Type columns.
Is this in the new version? I deal with hundreds of fields/columns and need to be able to not spend my time scrolling around.
It can be bothersome trying to find a particular field in a long list of fields in the select tool. It would be nice to have a search tool to go to the one I want. Something like what the formula tool uses.
I'm looking at this as an option for a few different parts of the product that we're working on. Can you tell me a little more about how many fields you usually have? At what quantity of fields becomes annoying to manually search through?
I can have upwards of forty to fifty fields and sometimes more. It becomes an annoyance when I have to start scrolling down because the fields go of the window. I can make the window larger but it's limited by the screen and I can't reasonably make the screen larger unfortunately. The real issue is when I'm unfamiliar with a documents field which often happens since we do a lot of adhoc work. I don't know where in the list of fields the one I'm looking for may be and so it's scroll down and up to find the field.
Thanks for looking into this. I've heard a few people at Inspire say they like the look-up function on the formula tool but saw it didn't carry over to other tools.
Thanks for the clarification. I'd like to hear from anyone else who may also find themselves wanting to search a large list of fields/columns.
PLEASE PLEASE add this search function, I hve tables with 200+ fields that are often very closely named and have prefixes that prevent alpha order from being helpfulk.
Definitely, this would be incredibly helpful, I usually work with extremely long field lists and being able to search would really speed things up. Thanks.
Thanks for submitting this idea and comments! We'll consider this as an enhancement when we make some improvements to the Select tool next year. We'll look for ways to find the column you want to select more quickly.
I often have a lot of fields coming in from databases and need to find the specific field. Sorting by name and then resorting back to incoming order helps but a small search bar in the Select tool to search for a field would help make things faster.
We are changing the status of this idea back to "Under-Review". This particular idea is still on the table, but we hope to have something better, so we want to make the Community aware that this exact idea may not be what we decide is the best possible solution. We are working to improve our tools as best we can and want to make sure that we give the users the best possible experience as well as continue to innovate.
Thanks for your patience. We will update the status of this idea once we've determined that path for this tool.

When is this going to get into the product?
Thank you for your idea! Our product team has reviewed this idea and cannot place it on the road map at this time. However they would still like to keep it in mind for future road map decisions. We'll update the status of this idea once we are able to term where or if we can place it on the road map.
Same problem here!
I fully support this. I currently have ~300 fields and it is difficult to track down the correct field, even using the sort fields.
Is this improvement on the books?
Agreed this is great idea. It looks like it's a duplicate of this idea here which has 59 likes already, so I suggest we all get behind that one!

@KylieF - It's probably worth pooling these ideas together?
I am currently working with large SAP exports with an average over 100 columns. Most of the time I only need 5-10 columns. The problem is: It takes a lot of time to select the right columns in the Select-Tool, therefore, I'd like to have a Column-Searchbar at the top.
I did a quick photoshop to show you how it could look:
It has been 5 years with a lot of support for this idea! Any updates as I also would find this functionality extremely useful.
This would be very helpful!
This is a must! Why is it taking so long to review? It seems like a very basic function that will save A LOT of time to those of us who deal with hundreds of variables!
It's almost 2022, any luck with this function?
Shhh, it's still a secret, but this functionality is in Designer cloud! I'm going to keep pushing for OG Designer. Too many likes to ignore! Keep 'em coming.
Stay tuned! This feature should be coming soon

The ability to search for fields in any tool with the Select UI is now available in 2022.3! Typing in the search bar at the upper right corner of configuration will filter your list of fields to those that match on either Field, Rename, or Description. BONUS feature: We've also added a checkbox in the header to allow you to quickly select all/deselect all fields! Happy Alteryx-ing! 😁
