Ability to use Error tool on "optional" Interface tools?

I often use the Error tool to test user selections/inputs when building apps to make sure users don't "break" an app. I also often will use 'optional' interface tools that get collapsed under a check box or a radio select option (Alteryx makes this so easy!). However, it seems like the Error tools stay active on interface tools that are not in use - which usually means they 'error' because they aren't getting any input from the inactive interface tool and therefore whatever test they are configured to run fails. Is there any way to get around this?

@Alexandra_Mannerings this is feasible by connecting multiple interface tools to the Error Message. In the attached example, the Error Message requires that the Checkbox be checked in addition to the Text Box being empty in order for the error message to be raised.
