Download Tool - Additional Feature - Output of Server Connection Failure Messages

Hi

 

While the download tool, does a great job, there are instances where it fails to connect to a server. In these cases, there is no download header info that we can use to determine if the connection has failed or not. 

 

Currently the tool ouputs a failure message to the results window when such a failure occurs. 

 

Having the 'failed to connect to server' message coming into the workflow in real time would allow for iterative macro to re-try.

To your point Gavin - the Download tool feels like it's still in a very early stage of maturity compared to the other tools - and requires hand-crafting of post & header messages, etc.  This becomes a real hindrance for non-technical people in an environment with a corporate proxy server etc.

 

One way to ease the pain would be to allow the user a window to browse to the site, thought the proxy, and then select which site or frame on the site they want to take (similar to the web connector in Excel).    This would take this tool from an advanced user tool to something accessible to anyone who can browse the internet.

 

Additionally - when there's a fail to connect - there's currently not a well-described error message giving you an indication of what to fix.   If the Alterxy team can change the Download tool to be more user approachable, it would be helpful during this reengineering to also include rich error messaging.

The status of this idea has been changed to 'Inactive'. This status indicates that:

 

1. The idea has not had activity in the form of likes or comments in over a year.

2. The idea has not reached ten likes.

3. The idea is still in the 'New Idea' status. 

 

However, this doesn't mean your idea won't be implemented! The Community can still like and comment on this idea. With enough renewed interest, this idea can be brought back into the 'New Idea' status.
